WOW!!! The trailer to this new film, PRECIOUS (based on the novel PUSH by Sapphire) just brings out emotions of angst as one questions, “What is happening to our children?”
Precious stars a newcomer GABBY SIDIBE (Clareece “Precious” Jones is an overweight, illiterate African-American teen in Harlem. Just as she’s about to give birth to her second child, Jones is accepted into an alternative school where a teacher helps her find a new path in her life.) In the supporting cast are two of my favorites: Mo’Nique (Yes…that damn funny Queen of Comedy) and Mariah Carey(Yes…that Mariah Carey…no, really.)
Mo’Nique has won the SPECIAL JURY PRIZE for her Supporting Actress Performance at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2009. This is Mo’Nique as we never have seen her before. She has garnered a great deal of critical praise and even had Oprah Winfrey saying, “I saw Mo’Nique’s performance in this film and was so blown away!” Mariah Carey – stripped off of layers of glitz and glamour – plays a Social Worker in the film. This role is all “gold” and no GLITTER. The preview makes one ask, “Is that really Mimi up on the screen? Because she worked on that acting muscle as far as we can tell. (Maybe she’s in a better head-space, being happily married and all, to show her true acting chops.) Who knows or cares, what I do know is that Mariah Carey is receiving rave reviews from all of the critics at Sundance (Hooray for Mimi!!!)
Paula Patton (as the uplifting teacher who shows Precious she’s deserving of love), Lenny Kravitz (as the sexy-ass nurse with the kindest of hearts), Kimberly Russell (from “Head of the Class” fame) and The View’s very own Sherri Shepherd (playing a part so ”real” that you may finish the film and not realize it was Sherri) also co-star in the film and their performances added luster to the award-winning movie, directed by Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball, Shadowboxer, etc.)
Precious has won the Coveted AUDIENCE AWARD and the GRAND JURY PRIZE in The BEST DRAMA Category at the Sundance Film Festival.
PRECIOUS, A LEE DANIELS FILM – COMING NOVEMBER 6, 2009
