Detox/Cleanse Day 1

Started the cleanse today – excited!!  However, we spent over $130.00 at Whole Foods for only 5 Days of food for 2 people (where breakfast and dinner is nothing more than smoothies and soups.)

NIGHT 1:  Had butter-nut squash soup (strained) with two tablespoons of walnut oil.

FEELING:  Soup was great, but we are feeling hungry!!!  Have to stay strong (I do enjoy a small bowl of Cheerios at night…can’t do it though!)

DAY 1 BREAKFAST:  Had a fruit smoothie (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, green apple and water.)  We forgot to buy the coconut milk.  Didn’t taste too bad without it…didn’t taste great either.

I tried to make the smoothie look like a cocktail since the amount was so little (I put it in a red-wine glass.)

FEELING: I woke up for the first time without a stuffy nose.  We sleep with the air-conditioner on all year long and so we wake up most mornings with runny noses…NOT this morning!  I really had a great night’s sleep (hadn’t slept well in about 4 months.)  I know it’s only the first day, but I even see some facial inflammation reduced (the kind of inflammation dairy causes – or so they say.)  I also feel less weighed down.  This morning’s cleansing breakfast did not make me feel hungry at all but to be fair, I never feel hungry in the mornings.  So far so good!!

DAY 1 LUNCH:  Grilled Chicken (walnut oil) with Steamed Broccoli.  I actually steamed the vegetable with water and lemon slices and garlic cloves (the steam actually infuses the vegetable with a mild lemon-garlic flavor.)  Herbs and spices are not excluded from the cleanse, so you know I gave it my lil spice rub, before I grilled the chicken.

The trick is to make the food “look” as appetizing as possibble.  Leave the broccoli whole and garnish with whatever you’re cooking with, in this case lemon.  Slicing the chicken breast gives it more surface area on the plate when fanned out, giving the appearance of a fuller plate.

Still not feeling hungry, still feeling “light”, but not feeling that I have enough ”strength” for the gym.

DAY 1 DINNER: Had a banana and almond butter smoothie (made with almond milk and agave for sweetner…blended with ice.)  It tastes exactly like our banana and peanut butter milkshake.

I didn’t know if I was going to enjoy the taste of almond milk – it’s tasty and absolutely natural and non-dairy. Organic Blue Agave is a natural sweetner (comes from a plant in Mexico and is about 2 to 3 times sweeter than sugar.)  Organic Blue Agave has a glycemic index of only 11 (sugar has a glycemic index of 68-85).

FEELING:  Watching Jonathan eat roast chicken, brwon rice with toasted almonds, and steamed vegetables (and smelling it) while we drank shakes (Banana Almond) was really tough.  Good thing the smoothies/shakes were thick!
