Apple’s iPod Touch – A Review

What can I say about Apple’s iPod Touch?

It is Wonderful!! The music, games, calendar, internet, and email all with great graphics fit in the palm of your hand.  Those of you who have Apple’s iPhone already know what I mean – same features, minus the phone & camera.  I didn’t get the iPhone because I truly believe that Verizon Wireless has the best mobile phone service in this country (Apple is affiliated with AT&T and I’m sorry, that service sucks – again, just my opinion.)

So, why did I get Apple’s iPod Touch?

When I went to Cancun last month, I had to travel with my top-quality Laptop and I really did not want to do that.  The laptop is not heavy, but when you have to go through airports, customs, planes, hotels, shuttles, etc., it gets really tiring – plus you have to pay for extra baggage now for most major airlines.  Then I had to lug that laptop (in the blistering sun) to find free WiFi (Starbucks, Haagen Dazs, etc.,) since my hotel wanted to charge me $26USD per day for their WiFi (yeah’OK!) If I had my Apple iPod Touch, I could have just slipped the cool new tech-toy in my shorts, had two scoops of ice-cream at Haagen Dazs, and been done with it. When I returned from my trip, I realized if I’m going to be away from my Laptop (interviews, LSAT prep courses, law school, vacations, etc.,) how am I going to keep up with my site, blogs, twitter, email, IMs, research, and music – short from carrying my laptop everywhere?? Then my son told me about Apple’s iPod Touch…it was a clear solution.

Apple uses SAFARI for their products.

Safari is supposed to be the fastest web-browser for ANY mobile handheld gadget. I was sold once I knew that my site “H. Luiz Presents…” would look exactly like it does on Internet Explorer and FireFox on any PC or Mac.  When I log on, I can update my blog (comments, videos, posts, pages, etc.,) just like I would on my Laptop or PC.  The “mouse pointer” is now my finger, so where I would “click” on the internet/my site, I now just “touch.” It is awesome!

The Apps (applications) and music buttons are amazing features on the iPod Touch.  Applications are just that – Applications.  Most Apps are games (lots of them free, some about $1) and when I say games, I’m talking about 3D action, motion-sensitive, high-definition GAMES! (I’m sure that’s the real reason my son had recommended the iPod Touch.)  Hmmmmmmmmmmm?

There’s more to the Apps than just games though. For instance, I have AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) in my Apps as well as my favorite satellite site – Google Earth. I also have Flixster (which gives me previews, showtimes, and theaters of movies playing in my area) and an App called What’s On ( a TV/Cable listing for my provider – Comcast.)  Additionally, I have a Fitness App that gives me weekly video casts of exercises (a video for each muscle group) that I can incorporate in my routines or if I can’t make it to the gym, exercises I can do at home (yeah’OK!!)  My favorite games? Currently it’s “Deal or No Deal” and a casino-style BlackJack (there’s nothing like gambling with virtual money.) All these Apps are free by the way and there are literally hundreds of free Apps to choose from.

If you’re a YouTube freak (and most of you are)…

Then you’ll be happy to know that Apple’s iPod Touch is affiliated with the mega video site and so it comes with a free YouTube Application built into the gadget.  All YouTube videos automatically play in a hi-def resolution on the gadgets landscape widescreen – it’s pretty cool.  I use YouTube videos on my site so this is real convenient for me.

The only negative I have found is…

that the battery life is supposed to last 6 hours, but it’s more like 2 hours of continuous play.  I believe that the internet browser uses up a lot of “juice,” which is MY primary use for the iPod Touch.   A lot of people have complained to Apple about the battery life (not just me) and they are supposedly working on it.  However, 2 hours is more than enough time for me to use the new tech-toy for my needs when I’m away from my Laptop.

Other than that one negative aspect of it, I would highly recommend Apple’s iPod Touch.  Especially if you are on the go and the internet is your preferred medium (Blogs, Sites, e-mail, Twitter, YouTube, the “dreaded” text, etc.) It’s great, compact, and user-friendly.  And my son wants me to add, “They have great games too!!”
